Patti LuPone's "Gypsy" to be filmed?

Those purchasing tickets for the final performances of Gypsy have been receiving the following notice as per an article on Playbill:

"IMPORTANT NOTICE: This performance of 'Gypsy' may be filmed for future purposes. Please be advised that stationary and moving cameras may be placed throughout the theatre as we attempt to capture this historic production on film."

Hm....

I have heard(don't know if it's true) that Bway performances are filmed using just a single, stationery camera and stored in some museum. These, I believe, are never shown to the public. Because LuPone is getting so much praise for her performance, do you think that this taping will be made available to the general public?

The Theatre on Film and Tape archive is a part of hte New York Public Library's performing arts sector, located at the branch in Lincoln Center. I believe they professionally shoot the shows with three cameras and they are carefully archived - and are available as perusal for qualified researchers/theatre professionals only.

I have used the system once when I was working on my college's production of "Sunday in the Park With George." The director, musical director and myself (serving as dramaturge) looked at the archived videos of the 1983 Playwright's Horizons workshop and the 2002 Kennedy Center production.

Apparently one of the stipulations is that you are only allowed to watch the video of a production once and that is it.

You can peruse the catalogue on website: http://www.nypl.org
